For the Q’ero, Ayni is the sacred principle of reciprocity—a way of living in right relationship with the Earth, the waters, the forests, the mountains, and all living beings. Traditionally, taking from the land was accompanied by reverence, offerings, and an understanding that nature is not merely a resource, but part of a living and sacred world. Today, our increasingly anthropocentric worldview too often reduces the Earth to something to drill, dig, cut, and exploit, stripping nature of spirit and relationship. Perhaps some of the alienation and despair we experience today reflects this profound separation: when we stop experiencing the Earth as alive, we also lose a vital part of ourselves.
